Scientific Background: CLK3 is a member of the CMGC group of protein kinases in the CLK family. This kinase is moderate to highly expressed in most tested human tissues except in the brain and spinal cord where it is poorly expressed. Orthologues of CLK3 are highly conserved in vertebrates, including amphibians. Long and short isoforms (phCLK3 and pCLK3/152) result from alternative splicing and coexist in different tissues.. The CLK3 protein has the molecular functions of ATP binding, nucleotide binding, protein serine/threonine kinase activity, protein-tyrosine kinase activity and transferase activity and the CLK3 protein localizes in both the cytoplasm and nuclear compartments. CLK3 is thought to regulate the intranuclear distribution of the serine/arginine-rich (SR) family of splicing factors.
