Scientific Background: DAPK3 (also known as ZIP) is a protein-serine/threonine kinase that is a member of the CAMK group of protein kinases in the DAPK family. This kinase is moderate to highly expressed in most tested human tissues. Orthologues of DAPK3 are highly conserved in animals and plants. DAPK3 is activated by phosphorylation at T180, T225, and T265. Homodimers of DAPK3 or heterodimers with ATF4 formed via a leucine zipper domain is required for full enzymatic activity. DAPK3 plays a role in apoptosis. It phosphorylates core histones H3 and H4, and myosin light chain in vitro. DAPK3 interacts with transcription and splicing factors as well as with pro-apoptotic protein Par-4.
